Chern'ee Sutton

Ngaimai, 2016

Acrylic on canvas
121 x 91 cm

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people around the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This 3D painting is called “Ngaimai” which means “To Chase or To Hunt” in the Kalkadoon language.

The Kalkadoon people have ruled the emu foot province for at least the last 40,000 years and have been connected to their lands through their dreaming stories, songs and art. The boomerangs represent the weapons they have used to hunt and provide food for their families for thousands of years.
